Character- mother

How does the author show us what kind of person Billie Jo's mother is? What is their relationship like(mom and daughter)?

  1. Billie Jo's mother is a strict parent who expects Billie to exceed in school and in playing the piano however she disapproves of Billie's choice in upbeat songs mostly because she wants to be the one playing instead.

Their relationship is not very strong in emotional ways from Billie's perspective because the mother doesn't congratulate Billie's hard work in school, instead she just says "I knew you could." The mother does care about Billie very much and her safety but sometimes people don't realize what they have until what they have is gone and that's what happened to Billie.

  2. Billie Jo's mother is a hard working, strict parent who doesn't approve of Billie playing the piano and many other things Billie Jo wants to do.
The relationship between Billie Jo and her mother doesn't seem to be strong. I agree with Jenny about how Billie Jo's mom is sort of jealous of how her daughter plays the piano. When Ma dies, Billie wants everything back, even the "I knew you could" her mom always gave her that she never appreciated. She's always thinking of her mom after she died, and thinking of how much she wants everything to took for granted to go back to the way it was.

  4. I have to say Billie Jo's mom is one of those really strict parents who just wants one thing for their child to do and that is to always succeed in school to be that best in the whole class.
The relationship between Billie Jo and her mother not a strong or pleasant relationship see Billie's mother does care but she doesn't know how to show it to Billie in a sense of giving her a hug or a kiss its just she only says "I knew you could" which might sound good to hear but its not.

  5. Billie Joe and her mother do not seem to speak enough. Billie Joe's mother has so much work around the house and her pregnancy. It seems her mother is not affectionate with Billie Joe. When she gets good grades her mother doesn't say 'Great job,I'm proud' but barely acknowledges her. Later, she realizes that is all she needed and misses her mother's strict and unaffectionate personalty because she knew they loved each other.

  6. The mother is rather controlling. Billie Jo and her mother don't really get along well. I agree with Jenny and Alayna her mother wishes she was the one playing the piano and earning the money rather than Billie Jo doing it. Billie regrets how her and her mother didn't get along until her mother died. She misses her mother very deeply now and wishes for everything to be back to normal. She can't talk to her father the way she could talk to her mother and that's what she misses most.

  7. Bille's mother is a strick parent especially when it came to her piano. because billie likes more up-beat songs. While her mother just likes to play the piano herself.
But she is also a careing mother and loves her daughter very much. I think its a shame how she died (had a bucket burning kerosene thrown at her accidently buy billie). You can tell how much she misses her.

  8. Billie Jo's mother taught her to play the piano when she was young, tho now she doesnt like it to much. Billies mom seems like she wants to be the one playing at a performance, probobly because she is better at playing then Billie, and Billie likes to play more upbeat songs then her mother, probobly because her mother is strict where as Billie is a free spirit, but after her mothers death Billie has feelings of regret because they were never very close, tho she knew she always loved her mother very much, and knew her mother cared for her, because if she didnt she would never have cared what Billie did.

  9. Billie's mother is loving, caring, and supportive. Billie sees herself as a boy, So she can never have a full mother daughter relationship with her mom. Later in the book when her mother passes her dad starts to see a boy in Billie. Even Billie thinks that she acts more like a boy than a girl. Also when Billie thinks that he mom can be more supportive, well her mom was being as supportive as she could be at the point in their lives. That was their entire mother daughter relationship.

  10. Billie Jo's Mother is fairly strict in her teachings. She is always telling Billie to do better in school for Billie's sake.

When Billie does well in school her mother does not react like you would expect so Billie believes that her and her mother do not get along in some ways. Billie's mother cares and looks out for Billie, but Billie does not realize it until she is gone.

  12. The author is showing that Billie jo's mother is strict parent, and she does not approve of Billie's paino talents, because she wishes that she was playing the paino instead of Billie and she plays a upbeat rythem thener mother used to play.their bond betweeen each others is ,when billie does an achievement her mother just says "I knew you could".I think the author is showing us that mother is a symbol of the emptyness inside Billie.ever since her mother died she has no moher to talk to or even tell her any news!

  13. Billy Jo's mom is strict to Billy and does not show her much aprreciation or shows any interest in what Billy does. One example is it says in the book that the only thing she said when Billy did something good was "I knew you could" And always made Billy joe depressed and thought her mother wasnt proud of her.

  14. Billy-Jo's mother is a very strict parent. She wants Billy-Jo to do what she thinks is best and what will make her succeed in life. She wants her to focus on her studies and be very smart. She doesnt like the fact that Billy-Jo likes to play the piano because that takes away her time to study. Because the piano is Billy-Jo's favorite thing it obviously moves her away from her mother and at sometimes can make her hate her mom.

  15. Her mother is very strict, and always envied Billie-Jo because of her skills at playing the piano. She wants her to go to school, study hard, and be sucessful in everything she does, like any mother would want for their child.

Their relationship is somewhat strained, due to her need for control over Billie-Jo and her feelings of envy over her.

  16. To me, Mrs. Kelby is kind of cross sided and has no room in her subconscience to actually lay off for a little while
