What do you think about the main character's name?
Why do you think Sal's mother left?
What did Mrs. Winterbottom mean when she asked, “Do you think I lead a tiny life” (pg. 86)? Do
you think she did? Why or why not?
Why is Sal's father the light of her grandparents' lives?

ReplyDeleteWhat is with her name. She changes it 34765475624 times!
ReplyDeleteI don't like her name becuse it has the word tree and that is redicules.she has more than one name
ReplyDeleteShe really only likes to be called Sal. It is everyone else who keeps calling her different names. That is not her fault.
ReplyDeleteI think she has a unique name; it's nice to see a character in a novel that has a more original name, unlike Sarah or Jessica.

I think that the name Salamanca is an orginal name that you don't hear anyone saying when taking to a friend. I also that the author made a wise decision with the name picking because of the name's orginality. It's refreshing to see a totally different name when you're reading another novel.

What page are we supposed to be up to right now because I wasn't sure so I finished the book?
ReplyDelete-Liz
I'm only on chapter six. When are we supposed to stop reading?

I think that it is an original name but I dont like it.What page do we read up to?

I think Sal's mother is keeping a secret from her family and that's why she left. I'm inferring this because we've no clues to her reason of leaving yet.
ReplyDelete-Brielle
I think she left because she never felt good enough for her husband or daughter. I also think that's why on the cover the author put ''don't judge a man until you walk in his shoes''. The reasoning why i think that is because throughout the story Sal is telling she mentions the times her mother states she isn't good enough for this family, like when the father picked them flowers and she began to cry saying stuff like ''I'm not good enough for you guys'' and on other accounts she had mentioned her mothers lack of belief in herself and her greatness and worthiness for her own family. That's why I think the author tried to interrupt how the reader (or Sal) can't feel what her mother was feeling thus, the mother running away.

I think her mother left because she was loosing who she was. She wanted to be called by her real name, not Sugar. She cut her long hair, which she never cut before. She rode a bus, which she was afraid of. I don't think she had been anywhere else alone since she got married to Sal's dad. I think she was also trying to find something, because if she was just going on a vacation, she'd probably tell her family where she was going. -Jackie
ReplyDeleteI think Salamanca is a pretty name and relates to her and her family's life well because their lives revolve around the outdoors.
ReplyDelete-Jackie
I think that Sal's mom left because she was hiding a secret so big that might a huge impact on the family so she moved without any explanation. I was also thinking that she was left because she didn't feel she belonged with Sal and her dad so she moved so that she wouldn't cause any problems with the family.
ReplyDelete-SS
I believe the mom does lead a tiny life. Evidence of this is when she says that she does nothing, and so on. Although she leads a tiny life it doesn't mean that her family doesn't need her. Exactly the moment after she leaves the family is lost. RZ
ReplyDeleteI think that the mother left because she felt useless. I also think she thinks that she is not good enough, makes mistakes, and can not compare to them. I think this because when the father gave her flowers she started to cry . I also think she thought she was not good enough to raise her daughter
ReplyDeleteI think Salamanca is a very unique name. I think that's what her parents were going for when they named her. ~Ashley
ReplyDeleteSPOILER ALERT!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think the mother left because she was depressed after the baby died. She wasn't herself after and she mostly kept to herself. She also kept saying that she wasn't good enough. I think she felt that she had to start over and try to change herself.
I think Mrs. Winterbottom had a tiny life. She always stayed home, cleaned, and cooked. She never went out to visit friends. She always stayed in the house and did nothing. ~Ashley
ReplyDeleteI believe that Mrs. Winterbottom did lead a tiny life because all she did was do all the work around the house that her family just didn't feel like doing or didn't have the time to do. Nobody around the house apreciated the work she did and despite her warnings about cholestrol, she made numerous pies just to please them and pass all the extra time that she had.

ReplyDeleteI think that Mrs. Winterbottom had lived a tiny life because all she did was sit home all day while she cooked and cleaned for her family. I also think she lives a small life because of the way Sal described how nobody appreciated her meals, especially her husband. Sal also mentioned that the mother's clothes were bland like her life, leading me to believe she had in fact lived a very sheltered life.
ReplyDelete-Nicole
I think that Mrs.Winterbottom had lived a tiny because she is always trapped in her house doing all of these chores. I don't think that Mrs.Winterbottom should be leading a tiny life because she had Phoebe and Mr.Winterbottom. Mrs.Winterbottom shouldn't be trapped in her house as if she is a widow and has nothing to do when she does like being around her family or even just go out and enjoy the air.
ReplyDelete-SS
I think Mrs. Winterbottom felt she may lead a tiny and tedious life because she acts "too stiff." What if she doesn't want to be so serious all the time? Maybe she wants to be more silly. Chores and house work don't help her to get out much, so that could be a big part of it as well.
ReplyDelete- Brielle
I do believe she leads a tiny life, yes, because she's too sheltered inside.
ReplyDelete- Brielle
I think Mrs. Winterbottom leads a tiny life because she works like a machine. She never hugs her husband like a wife would, and she doesn't show any believable affection. She never takes time for herself, which can be damaging. Jackie
ReplyDeleteI think she leads a tiny life because she is always working. She doesnt have time to have fun
ReplyDelete-kristina I cant wait to read the end
I think Sal's father is important to her grandparents because he is the only surviving child they've had. And they don't work or do much, so he and Salamanca are definitely the light of their lives. -Jackie
ReplyDeleteI think Sal's father is the light of her grandparents' lives because after their other children died they decided to pour all their love and hope into their last remaining child. They wanted him to grow old and have a long life since his brothers never could. Sal's father was also an extreamly thoughtful person and I'm sure that made his parents very proud of him.
ReplyDelete-Liz
I think that Sal's father is the grandparents light of their life because as Sal said he was the only one out of the four children to survive. Sal also mentioned that, ''Even if their other sons were still alive, my father might still be their light because he is also a kind, honest, simple, and good man''.
ReplyDelete-nicole
I think that Sal's dad is the light of her grandparents lives is because he is the only survivor of the six children. Sal's grandparents put all of their care, love, support, and they nurtured Sal's dad so much so that he wouldn't end up where the other five kids did, in heaven. My godmother once said, "Oh please Lord don't take all of my children away from me." My godmother had four children and now only one remains.
ReplyDeleteSals father is the light of her grandparents lives because all their other children had died
ReplyDeleteI believe that Sal's mom left because, somthing, not known to us yet, had come to her and changed somthing. I don't believe that the mom left because of the dad or Sal. I think the mom left of somthing we don't know.
ReplyDeleteSal's dad is the light of her grandparents becuase their other children died, therefore, they will treasure the last one alive. ~Ashley
ReplyDeleteBecause after her mom left they were lonely
